Beard Oil Review
Methodology

So how does one go about the job of curating and grading every single beard oil available on the planet? I mused long and hard upon this question and defined what I believe to be the most comprehensive and rigorous Beard Oil Review Methodology in existence. Each beard oil is graded an Overall %, which is based on a weighted factoring of individual % scores for Aroma, Therapy and Value.

1. Aroma

Lingerability
How long the scent of the beard oil lingers upon the person, as can be detected by his nostrils alone.

That is, lingerability is self rated. Or in other words: for how long after applying the oil can I still smell it? I personally seek beard oils that have a high lingerability rating, as I like to inhale the sweet aroma of the oil as I go about the business of my day.

0% = No lingerability: scent fades immediately after application

50% = Average lingerability: smell is detectable for 30 minutes after application

100% = Outstanding lingerability: this bad boy is so potent it can still be detected after 4 hours

Emanation
From how far away can the beard oil be detected by a third party.

For the sake of consistency, emanation is always measured immediately after application of the beard oil and I always use the same third party (my girlfriend). I consistently have her inhale salt water to clear her nasal passage immediately prior to commencing the measurement.

Distances are strictly measured between the skin on the outermost point of the chin and the foremost tip of the third party’s nose, whilst both parties are standing fully erect

0% = No emanation: scent cannot be detected by a third party

50% = Average emanation: scent is detectable from 1 foot away

100% = Outstanding emanation: this bad boy emanates 4 feet across the room!

Emotional Response
The emotional reaction to the sensory experience of smelling the beard oil for the first time.

Now, this is obviously highly subjective, as people will naturally have different tastes.

0% = Negative emotion response: disgust coupled with immediate desire to remove the substance from my beard

50% = Average emotional response: pleasant sensory sensation and with a smile being bought to the lips

100% = Outstanding emotional response: immediate rush of dopamine, coupled with overwhelming sensation of joy and heightened sensory experience

2. Therapy

Greasiness
Greasiness describes the viscosity of the oil. That is, the general thickness of the oil.

A 0.125ml droplet of oil is applied to a 43cm smooth vertically positioned glass substrate (a mirror). The time the droplet takes to travel this entire distance is measured.

15/4/16 – UPDATE: I have amended the methodology to use a 21cm substrate only! Many of the specimens were just getting too tired travelling such a long distance, so I made the grave and considered decision to shorten the distance require. Remember, beard oil doesn’t have legs!

This measurement is consistently taken with the same glass substrate and same droplet applicator, so results are comparable. For baseline purposes, a 0.125ml droplet of water takes 3 seconds to complete this same test.

0% = Exceptionally greasy: this slovenly oil took 2 minutes to traverse the distance, or did not make the finish line at all!

50% = Average greasiness: this oil took 30 seconds to traverse the distance

100% = Not greasy: this smooth mother travels the distance in under 10 seconds

Hair Impact
The level of therapeutic effect that the beard oil has on the hair of the beard

A 125g piece of “blu-tack” is molded into the shape of a chin.

I thrust my chin directly into the blu-tac mould with approximately 125 pounds of force. The depth of indentation left by the bristles of my beard is measured and compared to a baseline taken prior.

0% = No hair impact: bristles have left the same or deeper impacts

50% = Average hair impact: bristle indentation depth has been reduced by approx. 0.5mm

100% = Outstanding hair impact: bristle indentations have been completely eliminated by this magic juice!

Skin Impact
The level of therapeutic effect that the beard oil has on the skin around and under the beard

The skin impact of the oil is measured on the surface of the skin extending in an upwards arc from the side of the lip to the top of the side burn. This area is stroked twice for a duration of 1500ms. During the stroking, the smoothness of the skin is assessed. Now the skin impact test is highly subjective, although I make a conscious effort to commit the baseline measurement to memory, so I can provide a comparable result.

0% = No skin impact: smoothness of the skin is not changed at all

50% = Average skin impact: the smoothness of the skin is increased to the extent that it is noticeably moister and more pleasant to the touch

100% = Outstanding skin impact: the smoothness of the skin has been greatly enhanced and is now comparable to that of a newly born baby

3. value

Price per ml
The value of the beard oil is based on its price per ml.

Margins tend to be quite high on beard oil, in general, so it is important that we as customers know how much value we are getting from a given oil.

In my consumer guides, I have defined the market range and median price per ml for the Australian, Canadian and UK beard oil industries.

Value ratings are judged against the relevant country’s average market value.

5% = Poor value: Oil is in the upper 95th percentile of the market range

50% = Average value: Oil is in the 50th percentile of the market range.

95% = Outstanding value: Oil is in the 5th percentile of the market range.

Hair Impact
Fair adjustments to reflect the true value of the product

In some cases an adjustment to the base score from price per ml will be made. This will be made when Bobert Brush feels that some element of the product cost base or overall customer experience adds additional value that cannot be derived purely from the cost per ml.For example, if a beard oil has a fancy, expensive applicator that works well, this will be adjusted for.

If a beard oil has an unusually large number of essential oils and some rare ingredients, this additional cost may also be adjusted for.

How The Table is aid Out

Origin

Here I state the country of origin, from whence the oil is produced and shipped.

One of the beautiful things about the Master Index is it allows you to select wonderful products from around the world.

If you are on the hunt for a local deal, filter this column on your own country or one close to you (to minimize postage & packaging costs). However, don’t forget many artisan producers offer free international shipping!

Don’t be afraid to sample the many beard oil wonders that the global community has to offer!

Check out my global consumer guides to the UK, Canada and Australia. I’ve analysed not only the best beard oils, but every beard oil from these countries!

Aroma

The Aroma score reflects on the olfactory experience of the beard oil. Aroma is assessed on the weighted factoring of Lingerability, Emanation and Emotional Response scores. See the Beard Oil Review Methodology for more details.

If you are primarily looking for an oil that is going to smell nice, try sorting the master index by Aroma – by clicking on that column header.

Overall

The Overall score represents a factored combination of Aroma, Therapy and Value.

I won’t score an oil over 95% unless it performs exceptionally well in all three criteria.

If you are not particularly fussed about any one aspect of the oil and want to base your purchasing decision on the balance of all criteria, then sort the Master Index on the Overall score (after you have applied the relevant filters)

Base Oil

This column lists the carrier oil that has the greatest proportion in the recipe.
Every beard oil recipe is comprised of two major elements: carrier oils and essential oils. The carrier oil is the oil that makes up the bulk of the product. The essential oils are concentrated distillations that give each beard oil its unique scent and other valuable properties.
With the Base Oil column I am showing you what makes up the bulk of what’s in the bottle. Always read the full review of each oil, to see the detailed breakdown of ingredients!

Therapy

The Therapy score reflects on the experience the oil delivers to the body. Therapy is assessed on the weighted factoring of Hair Impact, Skin Impact and Greasiness scores. See the Beard Oil Review Methodology for more details.
If you are primarily after a beard oil that is going to deliver therapeutic value to your hair or skin, then sort the Master Index by the Therapy column. Give it a click.

Price

Prices are noted in the local currency. If you are purchasing from overseas, this will be converted into your currency at the prevailing exchange rate upon checkout.
The prices stated exclude Postage & Packaging, which will vary from supplier to supplier and upon your location.

Scent

This column can be used to filter the Scent of the product. I have split all the beard oils into Categories of scent, rather than using a unique description for each oil.

This way, you can easily filter the Master Index according to the category of scent you fancy exploring.

You still need to explore the full review to get all the subtle detail of each product’s scent.

Value

Value is based on the price per ml of the beard oil.

This is a very transparent measurement and I include the full calculation and parameters used to calculate the Value score in the detail of each review.

If you are primarily searching for a cheap beard oil, sort the Master Index by the Value column. The top beard oil will be the cheapest.

If a beard oil has an unusually large number of essential oils and some rare ingredients, this additional cost may also be adjusted for.

The Bobert Brush Thumbs Up System

I also use the Golden Thumbs Up as an indication of exceptional quality. You have my sincerest assurance that any oil displaying The Golden Thumbs Up is among the best beard oil that money can buy and is a product of outstanding craftsmanship.
